Group exhibition, “Art has a smell”,

The Farm Gallery, Holon

The project “Art has a smell”, put at the center the sense of smell and its expression in art and design. 58 Israeli and international designers and artists took part in the project and present a long list of design and art works, all of which have a connection to the sense of smell, its advantages, its limitations and its characteristics that relate to art. The exhibition took place in The Farm gallery that locate in surrounding agricultural school.

Behind the project is Prof. Yehuda Roth, who has been dealing for decades with the medical, research and cultural aspects of the sense of smell as part of his work in the Department of Otolaryngology at Wolfson Medical Center in Holon. 

Chanchal's installation was in the entrance of the gallery in the center of the farm. In the display were art works that deal with perfume scents, scents from industry and scents from nature.

 

Chanchal Banga spices boxes were like floating memories in the space, recalling the smells of cooking and referring to different religious rituals.

 

The installation was made from pieces of wood Chanchal found in the street. He build boxes and put in each box different spices, including salt that doesn't have a smell but it neutralize bad smells. In Chanchal's region West Bengal when a guest arrived he served with a meal and little salt is put on his plate to remove evil eye.
